COVERAGE

Coverage is the cornerstone of the film industry. Every production company and studio relies on coverage as the first step to evaluating a project for consideration.

Coverage is typically 3-6 pages in length and consists of a logline, a 1-2 page synopsis, a summary of the reader's thoughts and impressions, and a "grid" evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the script., ranging from "poor" to "excellent" on story, premise, character development, structure, and visual appeal. All of this culminates in a final "grade" of the script:  ”pass,” “consider” or a “recommend.” In some instances, a reader may choose "consider with reservations" or "pass with reservations," and briefly outline those reservations.

Writers sometimes hire readers to evaluate their scripts in hopes of understanding what an executive is looking for or as a way to ensure their script is ready to pitch. Alex has written coverage for production companies, financiers, TV networks, and various agencies in the industry.
